More than eight decades of experience in caring for patients with urologic diseases has established Duke’s Department of Urology as a world leader in urologic care, research, and education. Past leadership includes some of the most distinguished and honored names in urology.
In support of improving patient care, our commitment to Healthcare Education by the team for the team ensures the quality of educational programs by adhering to Essential Areas and Elements established by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME); the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education's (ACPE) Criteria for Quality and Interpretive Guidelines, and the Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development enforced by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Over the past 40 years attendees have been engaged through moderated lectures, supplemented with video surgical presentations, interactive panel discussions, and case discussions presented by Duke faculty and nationally recognized guest lecturers, making it one of the most respected and recognized conferences of its kind.
Leading Edge Urology: Duke Urologic Assembly and Urologic Cancer Symposium
National
The specialty of urology is rapidly changing as a result of the tremendous growth in urologic cancers, diseases, and the treatment of these conditions, generating a great need for knowledge and up-to-date information. Additionally, changes as a result of improved technology and treatments, health care reform, and professional certifications increase providers’ need for knowledge.
Over eight decades of experience in caring for patients with urologic diseases has established Duke's Department of Urologic Surgery as a world leader in urologic care, research and education. In partnership with our colleagues in the Duke Cancer Institute, the LEADING EDGE UROLOGY: Duke Urologic Assembly has expanded to include the Duke Urologic Cancer Symposium. This expanded educational conference features lectures by Duke and guest urologists, medical and radiation oncologists. We have assembled an outstanding roster of national experts, participating in a comprehensive scientific program that provides cutting-edge updates on the most effective and efficient diagnostic and treatment options in the sub-specialties of urology.
Multidisciplinary Benign Urology Research Symposium VIRTUAL
The Duke KURe Multidisciplinary Benign Urology Research Symposium 2022 attracted over 140 scientists from 47 academic institutions, in the USA, Canada, Australia, and Germany spanning a broad range of scientific subspecialties. This virtual meeting showcased not only the superb research by our Duke trainees but provided an opportunity for trainees across the US and internationally to highlight their research. Over 40 abstracts were submitted, and the best trainee submissions were selected for oral platform presentations by the KURe advisory committee. The symposium offered 2 keynote speakers, 6 oral platform presentations by our awardees and KURe scholars, and 2 multidisciplinary panel discussions. During 6 concurrent scientific sessions, trainee presentations were judged to win basic, translational, and clinical research awards. Additionally, there was an opportunity on Friday for trainees to meet in small groups with experts for networking and advice.
Duke Urology's, Ian Berger, MD, MSHP, won the best Clinical Science Platform Presentation for "Rural for-profit hospitals are associated with higher reported prices for ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy among commercially insured patients."
Anissa Cervantes has spent the last year in Duke University Urinary Dysfunction lab with Drs. Purves and Hughes and will spend an additional year to further her investigations. She won the best Translational Science Abstract at the Duke Multidisciplinary Benign Urology Research Symposium on April 28-29 for "Specialized pro-resolving mediators reverse effects of chronic inflammation in diabetic bladder dysfunction."
